Wie viel wiegt ein SUP-Board?

Why does weight matter when paddleboarding?

A complete SUP board usually weighs from around 7 to as much as 15 kg. However, the final weight of a particular model is closely linked to its type, dimensions, intended use and manufacturing technology.

How much does a SUP board weigh?

The weight of a SUP board varies depending on its category and intended use.

All-round SUP boards are the most versatile models, usually inflatable, and work very well on different bodies of water. Their generous width and rounded shape provide high initial stability on calm water, making them ideal for recreation and learning. They usually weigh 8–11 kg.

Touring boards are designed for long distances, as shown by their pointed nose, greater length and increased buoyancy. Although less manoeuvrable than all-round boards, they track very well and glide smoothly through the water. Their weight usually falls within the range of 10–13 kg.

Surf SUP boards are designed specifically for riding waves, so they are noticeably shorter, narrower and exceptionally manoeuvrable, at the expense of stability on flat water. Rigid constructions dominate this category, offering better control on a wave, although inflatable versions also exist. Their average weight is usually 7–10 kg

Race boards are equipment for professionals and very advanced users. They are the longest boards on the market, sometimes exceeding 4 metres, but also the narrowest. This minimises water resistance and allows high speeds, although it makes them much more prone to tipping. Their weight depends heavily on technology: rigid, high-performance carbon-fibre versions weigh just 7–9 kg, while their inflatable counterparts usually weigh 11–14 kg.

Board weight and paddleboarding

The weight of the equipment directly affects how the board accelerates, responds to paddle strokes and behaves in poorer weather.

A lightweight board starts moving much more quickly and requires less effort with each paddle stroke. Your arms and shoulders therefore tire less quickly, making longer routes more comfortable.

Lighter equipment is also easier to steer. You can turn the board on the spot, perform a quick pivot turn or manoeuvre between obstacles on a narrow river with ease.

How does a lighter board behave in waves and wind? In these conditions, heavier equipment performs better because it has greater mass and momentum. When waves or gusts appear, heavier boards cut through the water more smoothly, hold a steadier course and are less prone to being pushed sideways by the wind.

Very light boards made from only one layer of material also often flex under the paddler's weight. This creates the so-called banana effect, increasing water resistance and slowing the board. Greater weight resulting from two layers of material or more modern welding technologies provides significantly better rigidity and faster, more enjoyable paddling.

For most people looking for a recreational model, a welded SUP weighing between 8 and 9.5 kg is a good middle ground. This weight offers an ideal balance: the board is not too heavy to carry, while maintaining suitable rigidity and stability on the water.

What should you remember before buying?

When planning a purchase, consider the weight of the entire set, not just the board itself. Add the necessary SUP board accessories:

  • a paddle,
  • a pump,
  • a fin and leash,
  • a backpack.

Additional equipment increases the weight of the complete transport set by around 2–3.5 kg. As a result, the packed kit carried on your back usually weighs between 11 and 16 kg. If you plan frequent walks with the board on your back, the overall weight of the package will be particularly important.
