¿Patines de cuatro ruedas o patines en línea?

What should beginners choose, and what suits more advanced skaters?

Are you about to buy your first pair of inline skates or roller skates? With such an enormous range of models, it is easy to lose your way among the options. Which equipment will help keep children and beginners safe, and which will meet the expectations of experienced enthusiasts? In this article, we explain the main differences and suggest how to find the right choice for yourself and your loved ones!

Roller skates or inline skates? The main differences

Roller skates and inline skates differ primarily in how their wheels are arranged. This directly affects stability and the way you maintain balance. Roller skates have four wheels set in two parallel rows, whereas inline skates have their wheels in a single line. It is easy to stand still on roller skates without much effort, while taking your first steps on inline skates requires continuous balancing.

If you intend to skate outdoors on paths, through parks or along pavements, inline skates immediately offer an advantage. Their larger wheels handle varied surfaces with ease and allow higher speeds. Roller skates have smaller, wider wheels, so maintaining a smooth ride on asphalt routes takes considerably more energy.

There are also important differences in how you stop. Recreational inline skates often have a rear brake, although advanced users usually choose braking manoeuvres that do not use it, such as the T-stop. On roller skates, the stopper is at the front and is mainly used for pushing off, starting and stopping while skating backwards or after a turn.

Inline skates therefore allow you to travel faster and cover longer routes more efficiently. Roller skates, on the other hand, are a great choice for people who enjoy recreational skating, retro style or learning to dance on wheels.

What should you choose for a child: roller skates or inline skates?

Although roller skates may seem more stable, inline skates perform better for everyday outdoor skating. Why?

  1. Better ankle protection: good children's inline skates particularly models with a reinforced shell, hold the ankle securely, helping protect it against twisting and injury.
  2. Better motor development: movement on inline skates naturally encourages the correct use of the hips, knees and core muscles. Children quickly progress from their first steps to smooth movement, building confidence.
  3. Adjustable sizing: children's adjustable inline skates grow with a child's feet, often across as many as 4 sizes, making them an investment for several seasons. Examples include the Movino Cruzer Two and Movino Cruzer One.

What about more advanced skaters?

Once you have mastered the basics of balance and turning, your next choice depends on your favourite skating style and personal preferences:

  • Advanced models, such as freeride inline skates or urban skates, allow you to cover dozens of kilometres and skate dynamically through the city, negotiating kerbs. They also let you practise precise slalom manoeuvres or try your skills at the skatepark.
  • Roller skates for advanced users are primarily designed for people who want to focus on dancing, or jam skating, floor acrobatics, indoor skating and roller disco, or impressive retro-style moves.
