Recommendations: women's and men's models

Wondering which inline skates are best for your first outings, and which models more experienced skaters will love? We explain what to look for when choosing equipment and answer a common question: are men's inline skates really different from women's? Find the answers in our article!

Although we now associate them mainly with urban recreation, the history of inline skates dates back to the eighteenth century. The first designs were developed as an alternative to ice skates, and they became particularly popular in the 80s and 90s of the twentieth century, when skating became part of an urban lifestyle. Today, it is both a form of exercise and a way to enjoy free time.

Types of inline skates

Before buying, it is worth knowing that the choice is not limited to women's and men's models although that is also a relevant consideration. The market offers models for beginnersas well as for more advanced users.

In Movino's range, you will find inline skates suited to different skating styles and skill levels. For those getting started, we recommend models such as the Movino Cruzer Two : a versatile model with soft, medium-sized wheels that offers good stability and comfort.

More experienced skaters will appreciate models with harder, larger wheels, allowing higher speeds and more dynamic skating.

Children's inline skates are a separate category: many models have adjustable sizing, allowing them to grow with the young user and last for several seasons.

Features to consider

What should you look for when choosing inline skates?  The following elements are important:

  • Wheels – size is not the only consideration: hardness also matters. Softer, smaller wheels are ideal for beginners, offering better cushioning and good grip. Harder, larger wheels allow faster skating and better performance.

  • Frame – a shorter frame offers manoeuvrability and easier handling, making it suitable for beginners. A longer frame is more stable at higher speeds and is therefore often chosen by advanced skaters.

  • Bearings – ABEC bearings with ratings from 1 to 9 are most commonly used. The higher the rating, the smoother and faster the ride.

  • Boot type – a softboot provides comfort and lightness, ideal for recreational skating. A hardboot provides strong ankle support and the stability needed for dynamic manoeuvres or jumps.

  • Fastening system – laces, hook-and-loop straps and buckles are standard. The better the skate fits your foot, the greater the comfort and safety while skating.

Women's and men's inline skates: how do they differ?

Adult inline skates  differ mainly in size, shape and appearance.

Women's inline skates usually have a slimmer construction suited to a narrower foot and lower instep. They often feature attractive designs and colours. Sizes usually range from 35–41.

Men's inline skates are designed for larger feet, from approximately size 41 upwards, and have a slightly wider cuff. They most often come in classic colours: black, white and shades of grey.

In practice, the structural differences are small. If the fit and size suit you, you can confidently choose a model labelled men's or women's, regardless of gender. Choosing equipment is primarily about ergonomics and comfort.

What else should you remember?

  1. Protection first  remember a helmet and pads for the wrists, elbows and knees. They make learning to skate safer and more comfortable.

  2. Skating surface – if you plan to skate mainly on cycle paths or asphalt, choose fitness inline skates. For a skatepark, models designed for tricks will be better.

  3. Budget – inline skates are an investment for years. A well-fitting model will last a long time, and the comfort of skating will quickly make up for the higher price.

  4. Care and storage – looking after your equipment considerably extends its life, so wipe dust and dirt from the wheels after each outing. Check the bearings regularly, too: if skating becomes noisy or less smooth, they may need cleaning or replacing.

Store the equipment in a dry place, away from sunlightto avoid deformation and deterioration of the materials.
